MARINA STAFF EXTINGUISH BOAT FIRE AT AQUALAND MARINA

Flowery Branch, Georgia, September 21, 2005: The Aqualand Marina staff responded to a fully involved boat fire in a slip at the marina.  According to Kirby Scheimann, CMM and General Manager of the marina, “we were able to knock down and control the blaze in minutes, using the Marina Fast Attack mobile fire fighting system.”

“We were able to completely knock down the blaze and had it out by time the fire department arrived at the scene.”  Aqualand is a large, 2,250 slip marina and spread out in several different locations.  “We have the Fast Attack on a custom built trailer and the unit rolls off the ramp in the back.  We had it on the dock and pumping water in a matter of minutes.  The fire department was impressed with the Fast Attack pumping system and with the A-Teams (marina staff) response.”

The Fast Attack unit is designed and built by AMI member Gene Spinazola, P. E. & Associates, Incorporated.  According to Spinazola, “Our goal in designing the Marina Fast Attack fire fighting system was really the KISS principle. We wanted to build a unit that the marina staff could effectively use to control a fire, and with quality materials to withstand the rigor of the marine environment, both salt and fresh water. We’re not trying to make the marina staff firefighters, but we believe they can keep a lid on things until the fire department arrives. We have 47 units in the US and 9 in foreign countries.  This is the first documented marina save that we are aware of.  The Fast Attack did what we designed it to do but the Aqualand Marina staff made it work.
